The paper is out

The headline reads, " Overweight, woman runs to complete her great ract". yep it even has a typo. I saw this at midnight when I got home from work online. I think the title is a tad harsh, well its truthful. I stayed up for a while last night. I shed maybe 2 tears over thinking about going to work later, in a nursing home, where the sunday paper is king. But its okay I guess. I talked to her for almost 3 hours. I was kinda hoping it was more about running and less about my scale in its bad-back (winkwink). Both of the women I met through this experience were nice people. Hopefully someone reading this article will feel comforted in the fact they aren't alone.
Yesterday the St Pattys day run was fun with Autumn. It was 5k and hilly my time was 32:11 I think I would have done better if my lungs would have let me. Usually any time I run my breathing sucks until mile 2 and then my lungs let go and let me use them. It was nice to hang out with my running buddy, and be racing again! I think if my schedule permits we need to jump into another 5k soon cause I could have done better, maybe a flatter one! I love the shirt from this race!

  1. I read your article this morning in the times and felt like I was reading a story very similar to my own. I live in Patterson Twp and also run down at Brady's Run. I lost 70 pounds and ran the 1/2 marathon in Erie in September 2010 (considering running the full in 2011, but scared to commit). All I have to say is you are an inspiration and you will meet all your goals....just keep going!!! Thank you for not being afraid to share your story.

  4. YOU GO GIRL!
I am a 47 year old runner with a love/hate relationship with running. After 15 years I still have to look for motivation to keep me going and not use my age as an excuse to skip a run or stop. Reading your article gave me the motivation I needed for the moment. I am looking forward to seeing your results for the marathon. (Maybe I'll do the half.) :)

    GOOD LUCK!

  8. I read the article today on the internet. I want you to know that I'm training for my first 1/2 marathon. Last week i had made up my mind to not run. Today i changed my mind. You changed my mind I can do this. I weigh 198 lbs and was scared to run. I will run/walk and crawl to the finish line in April because you have inspired me to do it. Thank you so much and good luck in future races. Your rocked my world!

  12. Amanda, I read your article not once, not twice, but three times. And then I kept the paper for my inspiration.

I ran in highschool. I ran after highschool. I haven't run since. I desperately want to be a runner. But I'm a fatass and hate it with every ounce of my fat being. I blame steroids (the medical kind, not the "oooh look at my crazy big muscles kind"); I blame various injuries like a broken back several years ago (hence the steroids); I blame my horrendous chronic asthma - "I can't run, it's too cold! It's too hot and humid!". We have a $3600 treadmill that has less than *cough* 100 miles *cough* on it. Not even kidding.

I'm a physically strong person. I do things that a lot of women my age (49) can't do. I have stamina beyond belief.

So in the end the truth is I'm afraid of failure and that I won't be able to do it. I'm a perfectionist in everything I do and want to be the BEST the first time I do it. So to start with baby steps instead of running a marathon tomorrow morning doesn't seem "me". Although, at my current weight I'd have a heart attack just running to the end of my street unless someone were chasing me with a gun. OK, maybe not, but my lungs would certainly explode.

I didn't intend to make YOUR blog about ME, but I do intend to go back and read every word and make your journey thus far my insiration.

Thanks for sharing it with everyone. You're really terrific and I look forward to watching you succeed! :)

  13. Paula i admire the honesty! Once a runner, always a runner! You can walk run! And there are benefits to being in the booty club. I carried my booty for so long its made my legs tanks. They are stalky but i have 17 inch iron calf muscles. Read back to the begining I've been heckled. Just keeping saying to yourself- Karma is a bitch.
As for your lungs, I have asthma. I own a nebulizer. I run with my rescue inhaler in my hand. I practice breathing as i run: in in out in in out. I probably sound like i am in labor, but when i feel my lungs pissing with me i do that and i calm down.
Paula don't stop believe you are awesome!
